Aquaterra encourages young engineering talent

In partnership with the Norwich School and the Royal Academy of Engineering, Aquaterra Energy has tasked four sixth form pupils to come up with an engineering solution to one of the challenges they currently face offshore. The four pupils have been given a project brief to design an improved solution for the popular Aquascope 500 Camera System which Aquaterra currently use on rigs around the world, with the aim of incorporating pan and tilt facilities into the system to add greater flexibility for the user and to save rig time.

The project has been set as part of the Engineering Education Scheme (EES), which offers budding engineers the chance to work as a team, solving real engineering problems set by commercial engineering companies. The experience is designed to encourage school leavers to pursue a career in engineering and Aquaterra Energy were keen to partcipate in the scheme this year as part of their commitment to encouraging young engineering talent.

Project Engineer Michael Cadd has been working with the team and has this week joined up with them at a residential workshop in Northampton organised by the EES to catch up with the team's progress and assist with the project. "The team have come up with some excellent ideas, some of which we will look to take further. I am very interested to see how their solution develops and what their final product looks like. The Scheme is an excellent way to give school pupils a taste of what engineering actually involves and is a great experience for anyone considering studying engineering at university."

The project runs until April, when the team will present their final solution to staff at Aquaterra Energy, and also to judges from the Engineering Education Scheme.
